3D drop deformation and breakup in simple shear flow considering the effect of insoluble surfactant

چکیده
We have developed a multi-phase SPH method to simulate arbitrary interfaces containing surface active agents (surfactants) that locally change the properties of the interface, such the surface tension coefficient [1]. Our method incorporates the effects of surface diffusion, transport of surfactant from/to the bulk phase to/from the interface and diffusion in the bulk phase. Neglecting transport mechanisms, we use this method to study the impact of insoluble surfactants on drop deformation and breakup in simple shear flow.

Lattice Boltzmann Simulation of Deformation and Breakup of a Droplet under Gravity Force Using Interparticle Potential Model
Abstract In this paper interparticle potential model of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is used to simulate deformation and breakup of a falling droplet under gravity force. First this model is applied to ensure that the surface tension effect is properly implemented in this model. Two tests have been considered. First, it has been checked an initial square drop in a 2D domain can freely def...

In this paper, a numerical method is presented for simulating the 3D interfacial flows with insoluble surfactant. The numerical scheme consists of a 3D immersed interface method (IIM) for solving Stokes equations with jumps across the interface and a 3D level-set method for solving the surfactant convection-diffusion equation along a moving and deforming interface. The 3D IIM Poisson solver mod...
متن کاملThe effect of confinement-induced shear on drop deformation and breakup in microfluidic extensional flows
Droplets of de-ionized water and four aqueous surfactant solutions were generated in oil using a microfluidic flow-focusing device. The morphological developments of the drops in extensional flow and confinement-induced shear flow at various extension rates were studied using a hyperbolic contraction. This novel approach to droplet deformation within a microfluidic device allowed the probing of...
متن کاملDeformation of a surfactant-covered drop in a linear flow
We study the effect of adsorbed surfactant on drop deformation in linear flows by means of analytical solutions for small perturbations of the drop shape and surfactant distribution, and by numerical simulations for large distortions. We consider a drop with the same viscosity as the suspending fluid. Under these conditions, the problem simplifies because the disturbance flow field results sole...
متن کاملEffect of startup conditions on drop breakup under shear with inertia
A spherical drop is suspended in another liquid and sheared between parallel walls. Numerical simulations for drop deformation under simple shear typically begin with the drop placed in an established flow. For Stokes flow, the drop evolves in a monotone manner to a stationary state or to breakup. Experimental and numerical studies of this result in a critical curve which delineates the capilla...
